About NCDC as it Relates to NESDIS
NOAA's National Environmental Satellite, Data, and
Information
Service (NESDIS) manages the Nation's operational environmental satellite system as well as the largest collection of atmospheric, geophysical, and oceanographic data in the world. There are three data centers within NESDIS making up the NOAA National Data Centers: The National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC).
The NCDC provides the historical perspective on climate. NCDC ingests, quality controls, archives, and services satellite and surface based observations. With the use of more than a century of weather observations, reference data bases are generated and publications prepared to describe the climate. With this knowledge, NCDC's clients can learn from the past to prepare for the future. Wise use of NCDC data and information is the goal of climate researchers, state and regional climate centers, businesses, and commerce. NCDC's data and information are available to everyone, including the general public, industry, the legal profession, engineering, agriculture, and government.
