The four panel weekly chart above shows areas across the U.S. that were above normal (red) and below normal (blue). The composite chart shows the progression of the weekly anomalies of temperature across the country. The most notable feature is the persistence and strength of the cold anomalies in the eastern half of the U.S. Three out of four weeks were below normal across a majority of the country; this led to December 2000 as the coldest since 1989. In contrast, most of the west was near normal with the southwest averaging above normal.
