U.S. Drought Highlights:

• On the national scale, severe drought affected about 18 percent of the contiguous United States as of the end of August 2001
• Parts of the western U.S. were plagued by continued drought and numerous wildfires this month
• Scattered showers and thundershowers brought short-term drought relief to parts of the southern Plains, however long-term dryness remained
• Heavy rains continued across parts of the Southeast, but August was dry along the eastern sections from Florida to the Carolinas
• Parts of the Northeast continued dry
