Contents of This Report:
The map to the left shows smoke plumes from several forest fires in the Southern Appalachians on the 15th. Smoke from these fires plagued many adjacent cities such as Asheville, NC where often times visibility approached zero and poor air quality resulted in dozens of people being treated for breathing related illnesses.

November 2001 temperatures were warmer than average over the entire contiguous United States. Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and New Jersey all experienced a record warm November. |
| The graph to the right shows the 1918-2001 temperature time series forAlaska. In November, temperatures averaged across the state were below the long-term mean. Temperatures have been below normal for five of the last eight Novembers. Alaska fall temperatures were also below normal. |

It was the record warmest November in the 1895 to present record for the East North Central region. This surpassed the previous record set in 1999 by several degrees. Temperature time series for all regions can be found in the table below. |
Precipitation Analysis
| November precipitation was characterized by considerable regional variability. It was very dry in the East Coast states while some western states received above average precipitation. Utah experienced its tenth wettest November in the 1895 to present record. |

November 2001 was the 11th driest such month in the 1895 to present record for the Northeast region. Precipitation in the last four Novembers has been near to or below the long term mean. Precipitation time series for all regions can be found in the table below. |
| Preliminary data indicate that precipitation in the Primary Hard Red Winter Wheat Belt was below average for October through November 2001. The growing season runs from October 2001 through February 2002. |  larger image |
