Climate of 2002 - August Virginia

August rainfall was slightly below normal when averaged across the state. However, amounts varied considerably across the state with western Virginia experiencing severe short-term drought. This month marked the fourth consecutive month with below-normal rainfall, giving this summer (June-August) a rank of 18th driest. Long-term moisture deficits were severe in most areas, with the state having the driest September-August on record in 2002 (see table below).
