West North Central Region Drought

National Climatic Data Center, 15 July 2002

NOAA logo and link to site

June marked the seventh consecutive month with below-normal precipitation for the West North Central Region. The persistent moisture deficits during the last eleven months have resulted in near-record dryness for some seasons (see table below). Recent heavy rains and snow in northern Montana have improved conditions across parts of that western state, but the drought has gotten worse over the remaining West North Central states. According to the USDA, by early July the pasture and range land was rated in the poor to very poor category for: 41% of Montana, 55% of North Dakota, 66% of Nebraska, 69% of South Dakota, and 72% of Wyoming.
