This month was wetter than normal, statewide, bringing an end to the severe dryness of the previous two months. In spite of the September rains, Pennsylvania had the 27th driest July-September in the 108-year record.

An analysis of summer (June-August 2002) data by the Pennsylvania state climatologist office (provided by Assistant State Climatologist Rebecca Yothers) is summarized below:

In ABE (Allentown>Division 2) for June, July, and August 2002, the average
temperature showed a +2.4-degree departure from normal and thirty-two 90-degree
and above days.  There was a +136-degree day departure for cooling degree days
this summer.  The precipitation for those months had a –4.13-inch departure
from normal at this station.  According to the divisional temperature and
precipitations ranks, temperatures were above normal and precipitation below
normal from June-August 2002 for this station’s division.

In MDT (Middletown-Harrisburg>Division 3) for June, July, and August 2002, the
average temperature showed +2.5-degree departure from normal and thirty-seven
90-degree and above days.  There was a +244-day departure for cooling degree
days this summer.  The precipitation for those months had a –4.10-inch
departure from normal at this station.  According to the divisional temperature
and precipitations ranks, temperatures were much above normal and precipitation
below normal from June-August 2002 for this station’s division.

In PHL (Philadelphia>Division 3) for June, July, and August 2002, the average
temperature showed a +2.3-degree departure from normal and thirty-nine
90-degree and above days.  There was a +226-degree day departure for cooling
degree days this summer.  The precipitation for those months had a –3.18-inch
departure from normal at this station.  According to the divisional temperature
and precipitations ranks, temperatures were much above normal and precipitation
below normal from June-August 2002 for this station’s division.
