Climate of 2003 - December Southwest Region
Drought National Climatic Data Center, 15 January 2004
Recent precipitation has brought short-term drought relief to parts of the Southwest region. On a regionwide basis, December 2003 ranked as the 54th driest December, and November-December 2003 ranked as the 43rd wettest November-December, in the 109-year record. However, most of the precipitation has fallen over the northern areas. As noted by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (1/8),
For a third week in a row, strong winter storm systems continued to migrate through the Pacific Northwest, California, northern Nevada, and northern Utah improving seasonal snowpacks to above average. In contrast to above average snowpacks, significant storm systems have missed the Southwest this winter. Snowpacks in Arizona and New Mexico continue to be well below average, ranging from 20% to 50% of average.
