Climate of 2003 - July Nebraska
Drought National Climatic Data Center, 14 August 2003

July 2003 ranked as the 14th driest July, statewide, for the state. The recent dryness compounded long-term precipitation deficits. As noted by the State Climatologist (Al Dutcher), some communities in central and southeastern Nebraska instituted mandatory or voluntary water restrictions due to low water supplies. Severe crop stress occurred in the southwest and Panhandle. The Associated Press reported in mid-July that more than 500 irrigators in southern Nebraska were ordered to shut down their pumps due to low water in the Big Blue River.
