Temperature / Dewpoint
1. Two locations in Louisiana set new records for the earliest warmest minimum temperature on May 6, 2003 they are as follows:
- Shreveport reached 77°F breaking the previous record by 14 days, which occurred on May 20, 1902 at a temperature of 77°F
- Monroe reached 76°F breaking the previous record by 1 day, which occurred on May 7, 1961 at a temperature of 77°F
2. At Salt Lake City, UT a new monthly record was set for the month of May on May 28, 2003. Temperatures reached 99°F breaking the old record of 96°F which was set on May 30, 2002. This is also the earliest in the season that temperatures this high have been reached. The previous earliest date on record for 99°F was June 7, 1985, when temperatures rose to 100°F.
3. Several locations in Arizona set new record high minimum temperature records for the month of May on May 28, 2003, they are as follows:
- Tucson reached a minimum of 83°F breaking the previous record of 79°F set on May 30, 1984
- University of Arizona campus reached a minimum of 85°F breaking the previous record of 80°F set on May 29, 1984
- Fort Thomas reached a minimum of 75°F breaking the previous record of 73°F set on May 29, 1984
4. Several locations in Nevada set new record high temperatures for the month of May on May 28, 2003, they are as follows:
- Austin reached 93°F breaking the previous record of 90°F set on May 31, 1986
- Battle Mountain reached 102°F breaking the previous record of 97°F set on May 25, 2001. This is also the earliest 100°F reading, the previous was 101°F set on June 7, 1996
- Elko reached 97°F breaking the previous record of 94°F set on May 26, 1919
- Wells reached 97°F breaking the previous record of 92°F set on May 19, 1954
- Winnemucca reached 98°F breaking the previous record of 97°F set on May 24, 2001
5. Two locations in CA set new monthly records for the month of May on May 28, 2003, they are as follows:
- Cuyama reached 106°F breaking the previous record of 105°F set on May 30, 2001
- Lancaster reached 106°F breaking the previous record of 105°F set on May 25, 1951
6. Wendover, NV set a new monthly record for the month of May on May 29, 2003 when the temperatures rose to 97°F breaking the previous record of 95°F which was set on May 27, 1958.
7. Several locations in Wyoming set new records for the month of May and they are as follows:
- Lander reached a high temperature of 93°F breaking the previous record of 91°F set on May 20, 1954
- Casper reached 95°F breaking the previous record of 92°F set on May 30, 1984
- Jackson reached 84°F breaking the previous record of 83°F set on May 19, 1954
8. At Scottsbluff, NE a new record was set for the month of May on May 29, 2003 when temperatures reached 103°F breaking the previous record of 100°F set on May 28, 1934.
9. At McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, NV a new high minimum temperature record was set for the month of May on May 30, 2003, when a minimum temperature of 89°F was reached. This breaks the previous record of 85°F set on May 28, 2000.
Rainfall
1. At Nashville, TN a new monthly precipitation record was set for May on May 11, 2003. A total of 4.63 inches of rain fell on the 11th, breaking the previous monthly record of 3.95 inches which was set on May 6, 1984.
2. At Muscle Shoals, AL a new record was set for the wettest calendar day ever during the month of May on May 6, 2003. A total of 4.67 inches of rain fell breaking the previous record of 3.61 inches set on May 14, 1903.
3. Beaumont, LA experienced the driest May on record during May 2003. A total of only 0.01 inches of rain fell breaking the previous record of 0.08 inches which occurred in May of 1998. Since January 1, 2003 Beaumont has only received 10.73 inches of rain, normal rainfall total for May is 22.46 inches which is a departure of 11.73 inches.
4. May 2003 was the wettest May on record for Huntington, WV. A total of 9.67 inches of rain fell during the month, breaking the previous record of 9.26 inches set in May of 1974.
5. A total of 10.13 inches of rain fell at Roanoke, VA during the month of May 2003. This total sets a new record for the wettest May, breaking the previous record of 8.42 inches which was set in May of 1950.
6. It was the driest May on record for San Antonio, TX in 2003. The monthly total only reached 0.12 inches breaking the previous driest record of 0.17 inches which was set in May of 1961. May is normally the wettest month of the year for San Antonio, with a normal of 4.72 inches.
