As noted by the National Weather Service (Charlie Liles), recent rains have been beneficial in the short-term, but significant long-term precipitation deficits remain. The July 21 drought depiction by the New Mexico state drought task force still had a large part of the state in the Emergency/Severe Drought category on both the Meteorological and Hydrological drought status maps.
