WebMapper Help

WebMapper is a Java applet for finding Paleoclimate data held at the World Data Center for Paleoclimatology. Currently you can use WebMapper to locate and view the WDC's pollen, tree-ring, ice core, plant macrofossil, paleocean, phenology, and coral data.

With WebMapper you can zoom the map and select individual sites. For each site, WebMapper displays summary information (e.g., site name, investigator, latitude, longitude (in decimal degrees), place, altitude, the number of samples, variables, radiocarbon dates, species, date ranges, etc.); the publications associated with the site; diagrams or plots. In the future WebMapper will also provide query capabilities.

System Requirements

Windows	To run WebMapper you must be using Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher (see http://www.microsoft.com), or Netscape 4.5 or higher (see http://www.netscape.com), or Mozilla 1.x or higher (see http://www.mozilla.org).

Linux and Solaris	To run WebMapper you must be using Netscape 4.5 or higher (see http://www.netscape.com), or Mozilla 1.x or higher (see http://www.mozilla.org).

Macintosh	To run WebMapper you must be using Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher (see http://www.microsoft.com) or Netscape 6.0 or higher (see http://www.netscape.com).

Special notes for Macintosh Users

Java Virtual Machine	Your browser must be using the Apple Mac OS Runtime for Java (MRJ) (version 2.0 or higher). Apple MRJ is automatically installed with Mac OS 8.1 and higher. Apple MRJ can also be installed under MacOS 7.6.6 or higher but this configuration is not supported by Apple (to download Apple MRJ go to http://www.apple.com). See Browsers section below for how to set your Java Virtual Machine.

Browser	Microsoft Internet Explorer To set your Java Virtual Machine to the Apple MRJ: Under Internet Explorer go to Preferences in the Edit Menu. From the Preference dialog select Java and choose Apple MRJ as your Java Virtual Machine. After changing your Java Virtual Machine you must quit the browser and restart it. Netscape Netscape 6.0 will automatically use the Apple MRJ as your Java Virtual Machine. However, Netscape 6.0 does not fully support Java so some features of WebMapper will not function.
Hardware	Minimum of Power PC with 48 megabytes of RAM.
